President Truong Tan Sang attended a programme honouring the country’s sea and islands held in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap on July 29.

The event aimed to popularise the guidelines and policies of the Party and the law of the State as well as raise public awareness of the nation’s sacred sea and island sovereignty. It also called on sponsors and businesses to support border and coast guards, naval soldiers and fishermen.

Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh, head of the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region, reiterated the Party, State and people’s strong will and high determination to safeguarding the inviolable national sovereignty over sea and islands, including Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagoes.

It is necessary to improve public awareness of the position, role and potential of Vietnam ’s border areas, sea and islands while promoting socio-economic development and ensuring security and defence in these areas, he noted.

The Deputy PM also emphasised the importance of the sea-based economy as it makes up over 48 percent of the country’s GDP.

More than 102 billion VND (4.8 million USD) were raised during the programme.-VNA
