Hanoi (VNA) – President Vo Van Thuong chaired an official welcome ceremonyfor his Kazakh counterpart Kassym - Jomart Tokayev in Hanoi on August 21.

TheKazakh President arrived in Hanoi on August 20 for an official vist from August20-22 at the invitation of President Thuong.

The two Presidents held talks right after the welcome ceremony.

Before thewelcome ceremony, President Tokayev and his entourage laid a wreath atthe monument to war martyrs and paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at hismausoleum.

This is the first visit of a Kazakh President to Vietnam in12 years, and also the first time Tokayev visits Vietnam in his new position.

Vietnam and Kazakhstan set up their diplomatic ties on June29, 1992. Since then, the bilateral relations have been developing well invarious fields.

In July 2008, the Vietnamese Embassy in Kazakhstanwas put into operation, while the Central Asian country opened its embassy inHanoi in March 2015.

The two countries have maintained regularhigh-level delegation exchanges as well as collaboration in both the bilateralframework and at multilateral forums.

The good political relationship has opened up manyopportunities for economic and trade ties. Since the free trade agreement betweenVietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU - including Russia, Armenia,Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan) tookeffect in 2016, Kazakhstan has become the second biggest trade partner ofVietnam in the EAEU. In 2021, Vietnam-Kazakhstan trade accounted for 10% oftotal trade between the Vietnam-EAEU.

The visit of President Tokayev marks a new chapter in the Vietnam-Kazakhstan economic-trade-tourismcooperation. The two sides are expected to sign over 10 cooperation agreementsduring the visit. /.

Foreign policy contributes to propelling Vietnam into new era

2024 saw Vietnam significantly expanding its diplomatic activities with numerous partners and at various important multilateral forums and mechanisms. The country’s key leaders conducted a total of 60 external activities, including paying 21 visits to foreign countries and attend major multilateral conferences, as well as hosting 25 delegations of foreign leaders to Vietnam.
