State President Nguyen Minh Triet has commended the Vietnamese business community’s huge contributions to the country’s development.

The leader delivered the praise while attending a programme, entitled “Vietnamese business people with Hoa Lu-Thang Long-Hanoi: 1,000 years of construction and sustainable development”, which was organised at the National Convention Centre in Hanoi on March 4.

President Triet said Vietnam ’s economy has constantly grown, even when the world plunged into an economic crisis. This is a common success of the entire nation, to which Vietnamese businesses and businesspeople have made a considerable contribution, he stressed.

The Vietnamese businesses and businesspeople have gradually developed and their operations have expanded to the world, the president said.

He went on to say that the business community has not only helped foster the country’s development and improve the people’s living conditions, but also joined in social and charity activities, hunger eradication and poverty reduction, as well as the care of beneficiaries of social policies, the poor and Agent Orange victims.

On behalf of the participating entrepreneurs, Chairman of the Saigon Invest Group (SGI) Dang Thanh Tam promised to accomplish the tasks assigned by the Party, State and people as Vietnam is integrating deeper into the world economy.

At the ceremony, Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Information and Education Phung Huu Phu presented on behalf of the organisers 1,000 scholarships to poor students in Hanoi and Ninh Binh province.

More than 3,000 delegates, including 1,000 entrepreneurs, participated in the biggest event of its kind that was broadcast live on channels VTV2 and VTV4 of the Vietnam Television, and the Hanoi and Ninh Binh televisions.

Earlier, the businesspeople offered incense to the temples dedicated to Kings Dinh and Le and at a stele that honours King Ly Thai To in Ninh Binh province. They also planted 1,000 Bodhi trees in front of the Bai Dinh pagoda.

The attendees also joined 100 Buddhist monks and followers in a festival to pray for peace, prosperity and favourable weather for the whole nation at the Bai Dinh pagoda - the same site where King Dinh Tien Hoang conducted a ceremony to pray for favourable weather more than 1,000 years ago.
