President Truong Tan Sang met with officials of the Supreme People’s Procuracy in Hanoi on December 22, hailing the sector’s efforts to perform their duties, particularly in bringing major corruption cases to light.
The State leader, who also chairs the Central Steering Committee for Judicial Reform, spoke highly of the sector’s endeavor to thoroughly and strictly deal with major cases involving Duong Chi Dung - former chairman of the State-owned shipping corporation Vinalines, Huynh Thi Huyen Nhu - former Deputy Chief of the Risk Management Department of the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (Vietinbank), and Nguyen Duc Kien - former Vice Chairman of the founding council of the Asia Commercial Bank (ACB).
He also highlighted their success in detecting and investigating prosecution-related violations in northern Bac Giang and Ha Nam , central Thanh Hoa, and southern Soc Trang provinces.
The President also pointed out to the complicated crime situation, especially corruption and drug crimes on a larger scale, thus setting a heavy mission for the procuracy sector as well as the entire political system.
The prosecution of major economic and corruption cases is still behind expectations, he said, while asking the sector to fine-tune their performance to meet the public demand. He also ordered intensive training given to prosecutors to keep pace with the judicial reform in Vietnam .
In 2014, 77,500 cases were prosecuted, up by 1.4 percent from 2013, Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy Nguyen Hoa Binh reported.
Relevant agencies uncovered an array of cases involving those making the use of their positions and authority to appropriate assets at banks and State-invested projects, he said.
While cases showing signs of gangland activities got more sophisticated, drug cases decreased yet happened more seriously. Civil disputes and administrative complaints continued increasing with some likely causing social disorder, the official added.-VNA
