The Vietnamese State and people attach importance to foreign investors, including those from the US , and welcome their investment for mutual benefit in the country.

State President Nguyen Minh Triet made the statement while attending the Global Investment Conference 2010 hosted by the International Economic Alliance (IEA) in New York on September 22 (local time).

Speaking on the topic of “Investment in Vietnam ”, President Triet affirmed that Vietnam always pays attention to investors’ interests and the country’s leaders and authorised agencies are ready to join hands with foreign investors in addressing difficulties.

“Foreign investors coming to Vietnam are also friends of Vietnam ,” he said.

Over the past 25-year renewal process, Vietnam ’s economy has continuously seen a high growth rate, at around 7 percent. In 2009, despite the impacts of the global economic crisis, the country still recorded a GDP growth rate of over 5 percent.

These achievements were made thanks to the support and cooperation of foreign investors, Triet stressed.

Vietnam , with its population of over 80 million people, is considered a large consumption market, the President said, adding that the country also boasts a young, abundant and well-trained labour force that can meet investors’ requirements.

“ Vietnam is striving for rapid development, bringing it on par with other countries in the region and the world. However, we cannot do it by ourselves, the country needs cooperation and support from foreign investors,” he said.

According to President Triet, after three years of joining the World Trade Organisation, Vietnam has been penetrating deeper into the world economy. Investors from all over the world, especially US groups, are paying attention to Vietnam , which is considered a dynamic economy in Asia .

At present, the US is among the top foreign investors in Vietnam , he added.

President Triet expressed his belief that on the basis of the expanding Vietnam-US relationship after 15 years of normalisation, the economic-trade and investment cooperation between the two countries will further develop in the future, creating conditions for the two peoples to understand each other and become closer.

“ Vietnam always welcomes US investors,” he affirmed.

Earlier on the day, the Vietnamese leader had a round-table talk with representatives of several US groups which are investing in Vietnam , including Lockheed Martin, Exxon Mobil, Boeing, Raytheon, Procter & Ganmble, Westinghouse Electric, AES, Chevron, Pratt & Whitney. He also received business delegations from Houston , the largest city of the state of Texas .

At the meetings, President Triet stressed that Vietnam pledges to create favourable conditions for US investors in the spirit of mutually-benefiting cooperation in order to make the US a leading foreign investor in the country.

The US business representatives spoke highly of Vietnam ’s investment environment and vowed to expand their investment and business activities in the country in the coming time.

Businesses from Houston city expressed their pleasure with Vietnam ’s opening of its Consulate General in Houston , saying that it facilitates their cooperation with the Southeast Asian country.

They want to cooperate with Vietnam in opening a direct air route to Houston and setting up an airport group management system as Texas State is home to a large Vietnamese community.

The two sides also see a great potential for expanding cooperation in university and post-graduate training, they said, adding that Vietnam now ranks third in the number of students studying in Houston .

Vietnam is one of Houston city’s important partners with their two-way trade reaching nearly 230 million USD in 2009. More than 280 Houston businesses have established ties with Vietnamese partners./.
