President Nguyen Minh Triet met with the United Nations Secretary-General and the leaders of Germany and Namibia in New York on September 20 on the sidelines of the UN’s Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
At the meeting with Ban Ki-moon, President Triet praised the contributions made by the UN and himself to maintaining world peace and security as well as supporting developing countries.
He applauded the UN’s organisation of the MDGs Summit, saying that he believed the summit will create a new momentum for countries to fulfill MDGs.
According to Triet, the Vietnam-UN relationship is more in depth and has become more effective. Vietnam always stands with the UN in implementing the “One-UN” Initiative and other activities, helping to increase the UN’s role in international peace and security.
President Triet thanked the UN and its bodies for their assistance and support to the Vietnamese people during national construction and development.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon lauded Vietnam for its achievements in fulfilling its MDGs as well as speeding up the implementation of the “One-UN” Initiative.
With the State’s leadership and commitment, plus the people’s efforts, Vietnam will become one of the first countries to fulfill its MDGs, he stressed.
Later the same day, President Triet had meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba.
At the meeting with the German Chancellor, both leaders expressed their delight at the two countries’ ongoing cooperation, especially in investment, trade, education and vocational training.
Germany is now Vietnam ’s biggest economic partner in Europe . The Vietnam-Germany University , the first educational project between the two countries has also been very successful.
The Vietnamese State President and the German Chancellor spoke highly of bilateral cooperation in successfully organising economic and cultural activities during the “Germany Year in Vietnam” and the “Vietnam Year in Germany”, strengthening mutual understanding between the two peoples.
Both leaders said they hoped to boost their partnership.
The Chancellor said that Germany is keen to participate in more large economic projects in Vietnam .
Regarding regional and international issues, President Triet and Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed to strengthen coordination between both countries at international forums, including the UN.
The German leader congratulated Vietnam on successfully holding the ASEAN Chair in 2010, contributing to the region’s peace, stability, and development.
At another meeting, President Triet and the Namibian President agreed to strengthen bilateral ties in the future as both countries share many similarities in their history of struggling for independence.
President Hifikepunye Pohamba said he hoped that Vietnam will assist Namibia in agricultural development, especially in rice farming, and strengthen economic, trade and investment ties with his country.
President Triet also attended an awards ceremony for the UN Development Programme’s Equator Prize, which recognises the communities’ contributions to biodiversity.
The Phu An bamboo-growing village in Ben Cat district in the southern province of Binh Duong was one of over 20 communities to receive the prize./.
