The Vietnam Bar Federation should ensure member lawyers protect the legal rights of the people, President Truong Tan Sang said during his meeting with the association in Hanoi on December 17.
Since its establishment in 2009, the association now has about 7,600 lawyer members nationwide.
Over the years, it has taken an active role in the Government's national programme on administrative reforms, providing advice on several drafted amendments within the Criminal Procedure Code.
From 2007-2011, lawyers worked on more than 64,000 criminal cases.
Sang, however, said that the bar should continue to work on improving the human resources quality of lawyers.
He also noted that the number of lawyers taking part in procedures for criminal cases has been limited to about 9-10 percent.
The bar recommended the Government and the Party consider amending the Criminal Procedure Code to improve the role of lawyers and ensure that the bar federation and lawyer's associations could fully co-operate with Government authorities.-VNA
