Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung returned home late on June 6 after attending the 2013 World Economic Forum (WEF) on East Asia in Myanmar and meeting with the host country’s President and some world business executives the same day.

Delivering a speech at the opening session of the forum themed “Courageous Transformation for Inclusion and Integration”, PM Dung has stated that East Asia , where the world’s largest economies and many newly emerging economies are located, is growing dynamically.

This offers mammoth opportunities and at the same time requires greater efforts from regional countries to reform and perfect themselves and adapt to the increasingly fierce competition, he said.

In an era of globalisation, besides a nation’s own efforts, developing countries such as Vietnam need the necessary and sufficient conditions of a peaceful, stable and cooperative international environment on the basis of respect for international law, free trade and investment through economic connectivity and effective cooperation among countries in handling the common challenges of the region and the world, so that they can fulfil the goals in development, poverty reduction and industrialisation, said the PM.

He emphasised the special significance of the increasingly strong international integration process in East Asia in general and ASEAN in particular, while underscoring the efforts to strengthen connectivity and economic links among ASEAN mainland countries or the Mekong region, including the establishment of trans-national economic corridors, which he said, is an indispensable part of the integration process.

The Vietnamese PM called on businesses to invest in socio-economic development projects in localities along the corridors both for the benefit of themselves as well as the community and the entire region.

On the fringes of the forum, PM Dung had a meeting with Myanmar President Thein Sein and worked with leaders of some economic giants in the world.

The Prime Minister’s attendance at the forum has demonstrated Vietnam ’s active participation in WEF activities as well as the country’s policy of international integration in an active and proactive manner.

The activity has helped promote the image, role and position of Vietnam in the region and boost cooperation between the country with the WEF and Myanmar in economics, trade and investment.-VNA
