A seminar to launch a project themed “Raising awareness on impacts of hydroelectric dams on Mekong River ” was held in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho on April 22.

The 60,000 USD project, funded by the US McKnight organisation and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), aims to conduct communication campaigns to raise awareness of authorities and the communities in 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region on the impacts of hydroelectric dams built on Mekong river.

At the seminar, participants discussed advantages that the Mekong river brings to regional countries and the international community, especially to Vietnam , while calling on local authorities and people implement measures to cope with climate change.

Another scientist seminar on impacts of hydroelectric dams to Mekong Delta region is expected to be held in September in order to seek solutions in case there are problems with hydroelectric dams upstream the Mekong .

The project, with the first phase to be carried out in three provinces of An Giang, Soc Trang and Can Tho, will run till 2012./.
