Quang Tri (VNA) –
The recent severe flooding in the central province of Quang Tri has revealed many types of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that requires quick actions.

The mobile mine clearance team operated by the Vietnam Peace Tree in Quang Tri said on October 29 that they had been alerted by local residents in the mountainous districts of Dakrong and Huong Hoa about bombs unearthed after flood water receded. The team have found seven MK 82 bombs and nine artillery shells in the two localities, and have so far moved five bombs and all the shells to a safe place for destroying.

The same day, the mine clearance team under the RENEW project safely detonated an MK82 bomb found by locals in Gio Linh district.

RENEW is a cooperative programme between Quang Tri and foreign NGOs to restore the environment and address the consequences of war, especially UXOs. The main foreign partner in the programme now is the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA).

Peace Trees Vietnam is the first US non-governmental organisation (NGO) licensed to operate in UXO search and clearance in Vietnam. 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the organisation in Vietnam.

Quang Tri is among central provinces hard hit by historic floods this month./.
