Chairman of the Red Cross Society of Vietnam Tran Ngoc Tang on Mar. 3 sent a letter to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Society, seeking help for Vietnamese workers, who have fled unrest in Libya .

He also sent the letter to local charity organisations in Libya , Egypt and Tunisia to call on them to continue assisting those Vietnamese workers remained trapped in Libya .

When unrest broken out in Libya, the Red Cross Society of Vietnam urgently contacted the national Red Crescent Society in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Iran, Morocco, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, calling for their involvement in helping Vietnamese workers in Libya and in neighbouring countries.

According to Deputy Head of the Vietnamese Overseas Workers Management Department Dao Cong Hai, 9,751 Vietnamese labourers had been evacuated from Libya to its nearby countries as of March 3.

Of the total, 8,252 were moved to Egypt , Turkey , Malta , Tunisia , Greece and Algeria .

Before the unrest, there were about 10,000 Vietnamese workers in Libya , including 2,000 in Benghazi city and 8,000 in the capital city of Tripoli and surrounding areas.

To help bring those workers home safely, Vietnam Airlines will dispatch the third flight to the Tunisian city of Djerba on March 4. Its first flight carrying 318 workers is scheduled to land at the Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi the same day.

As the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs reported on the increasing number of Vietnamese workers flocking to Djerba city, Vietnam Airlines plans to launch two more flights to the city on March 5 and 7 and another to Istanbul, Turkey on March 6 to bring the workers home./.
