Red river sees abnormal water levels
The tidal Red (Hong) river, the biggest in northern Vietnam, almost
reached its first warning level in the stretch that crosses the
mountainous province of Lao Cai on December 13.

The unexpected water level, which measured 77m 90 was extremely close to the first warning level of 80m above sea level. For winter, this was abnormal and worried residents living along the riverbank.
The abnormal rise in the water level also halted the construction of the Coc Leu bridge foundations and river embankment, with machinery being moved to safe ground.
Some fields along the river were also flooded.
The abnormal water levels were due to a long spell of heavy rain in Lao Cai province and the upper reaches of the Red River in Chinese territory over the past three days.
