Thailand 's anti-government red-shirts started their planned rally around the Government House in central Bangkok at 1:00 p.m. local time on October 17.

Bangkok Post online quoted core leader of the Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) group, Nattahwut Saikua, as saying that the rally will not move to any other places and will peacefully disperse at midnight.

The red-shirted supporters of the UDD began to gather since late October 16 at Chami Marichet bridge in front of the Government House. The rally aims at demanding the Thai government to speed up legal procedure on a royal pardon for ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The peace keeping centre has deployed more than 6,000 security forces around the prime minister's office, other major state agencies, and around the Government House.

The Thai government has invoked the Internal Security Act in Bangkok 's Dusit District from October 15-25 in the wake of UDD's announcement that they were going to hold two mass rallies on October 17 and 24./.
