The Oc Eo Civilisation, located in Ba The area of Oc Eo commune, thrived between the 1st and 7th centuries, leaving behind numerous relics across An Giang. Oc Eo Mound was the first site to reveal significant traces of this ancient civilisation, and today, the name "Oc Eo" is used to refer to all related archaeological sites across the region.
Oc Eo is widely recognised as a hallmark archaeological culture of southern Vietnam, dating back to the early centuries of the Common Era. The culture was first identified in 1944 by French archaeologist Louis Malleret, who named it after Go Oc Eo, the location in present-day Oc Eo commune, An Giang province.
On January 4, 2022, UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre officially added the Oc Eo–Ba The site to its tentative list for World Heritage nominations.
