Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has instructed the Ministry of Finance to provide 904 tonnes of rice from the national reserves in relief aid to the central province of Binh Dinh, which is facing a drought.

Under the directions, the relief rice will be allocated to 60,287 local residents within a month.

Binh Dinh has not had any big rains in the past six months, causing a record drought in the central locality.

Drought has affected nearly 13,000 hectares of rice and other crops in Binh Dinh province.

More than 30,000 households in the locality are facing water shortages for daily use and have had to purchase water.

Of the province's 165 reservoirs, 123 have dried up.-VNA
