The Government of the Republic of Korea is expected to resume humanitarian aid to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea through nongovernmental organizations.

The KBS World on July 25 cited related sources that the Unification Ministry will hold a meeting with around ten humanitarian aid organizations next week to decide on the DPRK aid issue.

The sources said the organizations are seeking emergency aid for DPRK most in need of food assistance.

The ministry had earlier planned to settle on a ten-billion-dollar aid package for DPRK, similar to past years, but halted its plan after DPRK launched a long-range rocket in early April and conducted a second nuclear test in May.

The reasons for the latest change of heart on behalf of Seoul are said to be due to the increased urgency for humanitarian aid in the DPRK, as well as RoK’s attempt to keep humanitarian issues separate from the political situation, the KBS further said./.
