The results of a Denmark-assisted biennial survey of rural households in 12 provinces in Vietnam in 2012 were released at a conference in Hanoi on August 7.

The survey is part of a research project which is jointly conducted by the Central Institute of Economic Management (CIEM), the Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs (ILSSA), the Institute of Policy and Strategic on Agriculture and Rural Development (IPSARD), and Denmark’s Copenhagen University.

The 2012 survey was taken into over 3,700 households in rural areas, focusing on household welfare and with a particular emphasis on the markets of land, labour and capital.

The previous surveys were conducted in 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Professor Finn Tarp of Copenhagen University spoke highly of these surveys, saying Vietnam has gained considerable achievements but the country still faces a number of challenges in its economic development process.

He suggested that Vietnam should work out policies based on the survey results in order to bring more benefits for rural households.

According to the 2012 survey, the average welfare in rural areas has been improved thanks to economic growth but varies from different areas and groups.-VNA
