Stocks gained value for a third consecutive day on both of the nation's stock exchanges on Aug.31.

"Financial, consumer goods and heavy industry shares continued to lead the HCM Stock Exchange, while petroleum, technology and telecommunications made up the top shares on the northern bourse," said ACB Securities Co analyst Nguyen Duy Phong.

In HCM City , the VN-Index edged up 1.3 per cent to close at 424.71 points, with nearly half of all listed codes posting gains. The value of trades jumped 6 per cent over Tuesday's level to 784.3 billion VND (38.1 million USD) on a volume of 47.7 million shares.

Of the 10 leading shares by capitalisation, food processor Masan Group ( MSN ) and property developer Vincom (VIC) hit their ceiling prices, closing at 107,000 VND and 118,000 VND per share, respectively. Vietinbank (CTG) followed, with a gain of 2.7 per cent, while Phu My Fertilisers (DPM) also closed up by 1.2 per cent.

Saigon Securities Inc (SSI), which rose 3.6 per cent during the session, was the most-active share, with 3.3 million traded.

Vien Dong Pharmaceuticals ( DVD ), forced into involuntary bankruptcy proceedings last month, will see its final day trading on the HCM City bourse today.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange yesterday, the HNX-Index rose by nearly 0.9 per cent to conclude the session at 73.19 points. However, the value of trades slid by 2.1 per cent from the previous session to 740.5 billion VND (35.9 million USD), while the volume of trades also eased slightly to 66 million shares.

VNDirect Securities Co (VND) surpassed Kim Long Securities Co (KLS) to claim the spot as most-active share nationwide, with nearly 8.8 million shares changing hands. KLS saw a volume of 8.66 million.

"Sell pressures have started to become more intense, especially among some bluechips," said PetroVietnam Securities Co analyst Dao Hong Duong. "In addition, foreign investors have been selling more heavily. Profit-taking will weigh on upcoming sessions."./.
