The Republic of Korea (RoK) considers Vietnam an important partner in its external policy and development cooperation will be the core in the two countries’ ties, Ambassador Pak Suk Hwan said.
Addressing a press briefing in Hanoi on May 25, the newly accredited ambassador affirmed his country’s support for Vietnam assuming the ASEAN Chair in 2010m, saying he believed in the fruitful bilateral cooperation as well as cooperation within the ASEAN+3 framework.
Regarding the RoK’s presidency and hosting of the G20 Summit in November this year, the ambassador said the RoK government wants to invite Vietnam to attend.
He reviewed developments in the two countries’ relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1992. Over the times, the two-way trade has increased 19 times and investment rose 100 times.
Vietnam is also among 45 aid recipients of the RoK’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), accounting for 20 percent of the fund’s total aid in 2009.
Besides, the RoK provided non-refundable aid worth more than 108 million USD to Vietnam over the past 10 years, focusing on communications, education, healthcare, environment, industrial infrastructure and administration.
The RoK plans to provide 20 million USD in non-refundable aid to Vietnam this year./.
