The Republic of Korea’s (RoK) government is planning to provide 26 billion won (22 million USD) in humanitarian aid to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Of the sum, 13 million USD will be channelled through the World Health Organisation (WHO), 4 million USD through the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the remainder via non-government organisations, said the Ministry of Unification’s spokesman Chun Hae Sung at a press briefing on Dec. 28.

The amount will raise the RoK’s total humanitarian aid to the DPRK this year alone to 50 billion won (43 million USD).

On Dec. 18, the RoK sent 50,000 doses of A/H1N1 vaccine worth nearly 15 million USD to help the DPRK prevent the spread of the epidemic.

This was the first package of humanitarian aid the RoK has allocated to the DPRK since President Lee Myung-bak took office in February 2008./.
