The Republic of Korea (RoK) plans to deliver the first aid shipment to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) next week to help its northern region overcome the consequences of the recent heavy flood.

Chun Hae-sung, spokesperson of the RoK Ministry of Unification made the announcement on September 5 after the United States had sent 90 tonnes of goods in emergency aid worth 900,000 USD to DPRK flood victims on Sept. 3.

According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, since the late June, torrential rain and strong wind have wreaked havoc across the DPRK, worsened by the impact of Muifa typhoon in August.

The DPRK media said that the flood has claimed 30 lives, destroyed almost 7,000 houses, left 15,000 people homeless, collapsed 350 factories and workplaces and inundated 48,000 hectares of cultivated land, seriously affecting this year’s grain output./.
