New York (VNA) – The rule of law at national and universal levels holds a significant role in ensuring peace, promoting sustainable development, and protecting human rights, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the UN, has said.
He made the affirmation while attending a meeting of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly’s Sixth Committee (Legal Committee) on October 8-9.
Laying stress on Vietnam’s achievements in building and completing the legal system and judicial reforms as well as enhancing jurisdiction to protect human rights, Ambassador Quy said the country has proactively participated in the codification and advanced development of the international law.
Vietnam is one of the first 10 countries to sign and ratify the Non-Proliferation Treaty, he said.
Ambassador Quy stated that along with other ASEAN member states, Vietnam is making concerted efforts to turn Southeast Asia into a region of peace, stability and prosperity.
In the context of the complicated developments in the East Sea, Vietnam calls on relevant parties to exercise restraint and address disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international regulations, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS), with respect for legal and diplomatic processes, fully implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, and working to finalise an effective and legally binding Code of Conduct in the waters, he added.
The Sixth Committee’s meeting drew the participation of more than 70 UN member countries, and representatives of international organisations. They all agreed that respect of the rule of law at national and universal jurisdiction levels is essential to tackle current security challenges and conflicts.
Members of the Non-Aligned Movement said that the rule of the law must be promoted based on the UN Charter and international law, particularly respect for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.-VNA
