Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, known as ASEAN, launched the bloc's first satellite TV channel in Hua Hin, Thailand, on Oct. 23.

The 24-hour channel is designed to present news, information, culture, tourism and sports of the region in the native language of each country with English subtitles, said the Thai Prime Minister's Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey.

This channel will be an important tool in strengthening relations and exchanging culture among the ten ASEAN countries and to link their people together, said Sathit.

The Thai government and the Mass Communication Organisation of Thailand (MCOT) would jointly operate and provide funding for the TV channel.

Upon its launch, the channel began to cover the 15th ASEAN Summit and it will continue its operations after the summit./.
