Antibiotic management drew the concern of many delegates at a seminar in Hanoi on October 24.

The two-day event, themed “Antibiotic management in Vietnam and Asia”, attracted the participation of nearly 100 delegates from 16 domestic hospitals and over 20 foreign experts in the region.

Over 30 reports presented at the seminar focused on such issues as antibiotic management in Vietnam and other regional countries, the role of laboratories and microbiological results in antibiotic resistance-related issues.

Deputy Head of the Health Treatment and Check-up Management Department under the Health Ministry Cao Hung Thai said the seminar is a chance for delegates to exchange knowledge and experience in antibiotic management and the control of antibiotic resistance.

The department has developed a plan of action regarding the prevention of antibiotic resistance during the 2012-2020 period, aiming to raise society and health workers’ awareness of antibiotic resistance.

The project also seeks to enhance the national supervisory capacity in the use of antibiotics and drug resistance while ensuring the supply of certified drugs.

According to Director of the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases Nguyen Van Kinh, up to 90 percent of antibiotics are now marketed by inexperienced retailers without the necessary prescriptions from doctors.

Antibiotics make up 25 percent of drugs sold, he said, adding that domestic drugs are popular among rural people.

The two-day event was co-organised by the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases and Oxford University’s Clinical Research Unite in Vietnam.-VNA
