An international seminar on cooperation for economic-tourism development in the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) was held in Dong Ha city, the central province of Quang Tri , on July 28.

As part of the 3 rd Trans-Asia Bridge Span Festival from July 28-30, the seminar drew the participation of representatives from Vietnam , Laos , Thailand and Myanmar who share the corridor, as well as scientists and economic-tourism managers.

According to Le Trieu Dung, deputy head of the Multilateral Trade Policy Department, under Vietnam ’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, the EWEC has brought practical and long-term benefits to its member countries as well as opened up cooperation opportunities in various fields for localities it runs through.

Participants assessed the EWEC’s considerable potential, advantages and opportunities for economic benefit, tourism and service development in localities along the corridor. The assessment can be used as foundations for these localities to develop suitable policies and measures.

They also put forth measures to boost the economic-tourism development on the EWEC, including promoting the corridor as a common destination with joint advertisement strategies, and adopting policies to facilitate travel in the region.

The EWEC countries should sign cooperation documents relating to their tourism projects and accelerate the implementation of the existing Vietnam-Laos-Thailand tri-party agreement on tourist transport, they said.

The EWEC is one of the three economic corridor initiatives in the framework of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) cooperation initiated by the Asian Development Bank and Japan .

It was adopted at the 8 th GMS Ministerial Meeting held in the Philippines in October 1998 and included in the Hanoi Action Programme at the 6 th ASEAN Summit in December 1998.

The 1,450km corridor starts from Mawlomyine port city of Myanmar and runs through Thailand and Laos, entering Vietnam via the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Quang Tri province and ends at Tien Sa port in Da Nang city.-VNA
