A seminar to strengthen the oversight of programmes and projects for mountainous and ethnic minority areas was held in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak on July 16.

Participants at the seminar, jointly held by the National Assembly’s Council for Ethnic Minorities and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), discussed skills needed to examine and supervise the allocation of resources and the creation of the necessary conditions for the oversight of investment programmes and projects for mountainous areas inhabited by ethnic minority people.

The seminar also talked about the results of implemented programmes and projects, aired difficulties and put forth new proposals for mountainous and ethnic minority areas in the 2010-2015.

Over the past years, Vietnam has given priority to socio-economic development in mountainous communes inhabited by ethnic minority people through a number of programmes, including Programmes 133, 134, 135, 168, 186 and 173.

The integrated programmes have helped change the face of mountainous, ethnic minority and border areas. As of now, over 90 percent of targeted communes have gained access to electricity as well as medical and educational services.

Through these projects, each minority’s cultural identity has been preserved and cultural exchanges among ethnic groups have been strengthened./.
