The social responsibility of businesses towards workers and the community was the major topic of a seminar held in Hanoi on May 22.

The event was co-organised by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and the Centre for Human Rights of Oslo University in Norway .

Delegates at the seminar, including scientists, managers and lecturers from research institutes and universities, discussed a broad range of issues regarding the social responsibility of business, focusing on social welfare.

Ensuring social welfare for workers meets business needs for existence and development.

It is not only a kind and charitable action offered by businesses but is also stipulated in State law, the seminar heard.

Business responsibility in ensuring social welfare for workers and the community plays an important role as it contributes to the country’s sustainable socio-economic development.

However, delegates pointed out that many businesses have violated the law such as making false statements on the number of their workers, signing work contracts for a period of less than three months or other issues relating to worker insurance.

Associate Prof., Dr. Le Thi Hoai Thu from Hanoi National University proposed solutions to deal with the problems, such as enforcing businesses to contribute insurance for workers who are under contract, regardless of the scale of the business, while tightening State management over the use of workers.

She also suggested the abolition of a number of labour regulations.-VNA
