Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army Senior Lieutenant General Do Ba Ty hosted Flag Officer-in-Command of the Philippines Navy Jesus C. Millan in Hanoi on March 19, assuring him that the Philippines is a crucial partner to Vietnam.

Ty was delighted that the two countries’ leaders plan to lift bilateral ties to a strategic partnership, viewing it as an opportunity for the two armies to expand defence ties.

Hailing the Philippines’ efforts in bolstering multilateral cooperation, particularly within the ASEAN framework, the host encouraged the Philippines to uphold its role together with Vietnam and other ASEAN countries to achieve common goals of the bloc, including the establishment of the ASEAN Community in late 2015.

He thanked the Filipino navy for helping Vietnam in the search and rescue of fishing vessels in distress, and suggested intensifying exchanges between young officers, English and Vietnamese language training, and collaboration in search and rescue at sea.

Millan pledged to work towards realising commitments reached by the two navies, contributing to strengthening solidarity and mutual understanding between the two peoples and armies.-VNA
