Jurong port in Singapore will be home to the world’s first green berth consisting entirely of recycled concretes by 2016.
Jurong port in Singapore will be home to the world’s first green berth consisting entirely of recycled concretes by 2016.
The construction of the berth is part of a master plan to transform the country’s harbour system into a green model, ultimately seeking the most modern, green, and clean berths around the world.
To reduce carbon emissions, the berths will utilise certified green construction materials such as green cement, steel mesh and reinforcement bars. They will also include irrigation systems and drains to cushion floods.
Designed with modern equipment, Jurong will be able to handle large vessels upon its completion. Its storage area is to be expanded by 3.1 hectares, a 30 percent increase from its current surface area.
On January 16, 24 million USD worth of solar panels were installed in Jurong Port.
Jurong Port Chief Executive Officer Ooi Boon Hoe said that the construction of these green berths is one of the initiatives Jurong Port has undertaken to promote environmental sustainability.
Currently, with a berth system connecting over 600 moorings from 126 countries and territories, the port service sector contributes 7 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product.-VNA
