Singapore (VNA) – Singapore marked 51 years of independence on August 9 with the National Day Parade, themed “Building our Singapore of tomorrow”.

President Tony Tan, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and other high-ranking officials and nearly 10,000 participants attended the event at the National Stadium.

The story of the country’s establishment and development was portrayed at the ceremony. Armed forces parades and performances promoting a united Singapore were also held.

In line with the forward-looking theme, the show also featured a large Sky City prop made up of iconic buildings in the city state, named "Our Singapore of Tomorrow". The 6-storey blocks were brought to life using 3D projections to give a glimpse of the city in the future.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that his country faces three big challenges; addressing terrorism, maintaining economic development and reforming politics.

In the past five decades, Singapore has developed rapidly and is among the world’s fastest growing nations with GDP per capita estimated at more than 56,000 USD.-VNA
