Singapore (VNA) – The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is set to establish an Army Deployment Force (ADF) to help strengthen the country’s ability to combat terrorism, according to Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen.

The ADF will be officially inaugurated on July 12 with 300-400 personnel. The unit can also be activated to help in civil emergencies and disaster relief missions overseas.

The minister said the initiative came after the announcement by the Ministry of Defence in April 2016 on a series of plans to cope with terrorism threats.

He also said the unit will be in a "high readiness state" as it is a rapid response force and speed is vital in counter-terrorism.

The minister revealed that in order to better coordinate counter-terrorism efforts and response, a national security centre will also be formed.-VNA
