Singapore 's sports minister confirmed on January 12 that the city-state wants to pull back out of hosting the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in 2013 because of delays in the construction of a new sports centre.

Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan told the parliament that the ministry had informed the SEA Games Federation on its intention to host the biennial event in 2015 when the 1.34 billion USD facility is ready.

The SEA Games is a significant event in Singapore 's sporting calendar and Singapore would like the Games to be the first international event held in the new sports centre, he said.

“I therefore informed the president of the SEA Games Federation that it
would be ideal for Singapore to host the 2015 SEA Games instead of 2013,” he said, adding that the SEA Games Federation President also informed that there are several other countries that are keen to host the 2013 Games./.
