Singapore introduces white paper on elected presidency plan
Singapore (VNA) – Singapore has released a White Book on elected presidency plan, which affirmed that a president elected through a democratic election remains the most effective solution for Singapore.
The government rejected appointing the Head of State, a recommendation made by the country’s Constitutional Commission, according to the White Book.
It reiterated that an elected president needs a direct mandate to have the moral authority to veto with an elected Government.
The government also accepted a recommendation that safeguards minority representation in the presidency.
Singapore is considering amending its constitution, with m ost of the changes related to the next presidential election, scheduled for August 2017.
The country’s parliament will discuss the amendments this November.-VNA
