Singapore will host the first-ever Youth Olympic Games next year with nearly 5,000 athletes and officials from 205 National Olympic Committees taking part, according to a source from the Singapore Embassy in Vietnam.

The event from August 14-26 is expected to attract 800 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers and more than 500,000 spectators.

The athletes, aged from 14-18, will compete in 26 sports and also take part in a culture and education programme.

The 2010 Singapore Games will feature a sports programme similar to that of the 2012 London Games, with 26 sports comprising of 201 events, the source said.

The 18 competition venues were determined in consultation with the International Federations and approved by the International Olympic Committee.

A series of activities relating to the Games are also being held such as the 2010 Singapore CAN (Create. Action. Now) Festivals, which began last April and will last to March next year. Other events include the 2010 Singapore Friendship Camp from Dec. 8-12, the Youth Ambassadors Forum next March and the carrying of the Youth Olympics Torch next July./.
