Singapore will officially open an embassy in Brasilia , the capital city of Brazil , becoming Singapore 's first embassy in Latin America .

According to announced Singapore ’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, the opening ceremony will be held during an April 3-5 visit to Brazil by Singaporean Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam.

In Brasilia , Shanmugam will meet his Brazilian counterpart, Minister of External Relations Antonio Patriota, as well as Minister of Development, Industry and Trade Fernando Pimentel and President of the Federal Supreme Court Joaquim Barbosa.

The ministry added that Shanmugam and Patriota will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations between the two foreign ministries to strengthen bilateral cooperation and dialogue.

Brazil is one of the more than 180 countries which Singapore maintains diplomatic relations with.

Brazil and Singapore established diplomatic relations in 1967. Bilateral ties strengthened with the opening of a permanent embassy of Brazil in Singapore in 1984. In 2005, Singapore opened an office in Sao Paulo with the aim of boosting trade and economic relations with Brazil and other countries in South America.-VNA
