The 2010 naval exercise (CARAT) between Singapore and the US began off Singaporean shores on July 6.

The 16 th annual military exercise between Singapore and the US involves the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the US Navy (USN) and the US Coast Guards (USCG).

Rear Admiral Joseph Leong of the Singaporean Navy said at the opening ceremony at the fleet Auditorium that by using the same combat procedures and communication systems, servicemen and women from both countries will be able to operate with each other.

The SAF has sent nine warships and 12 aircraft to take part in the exercise while the US will use five warships and four aircraft.

Singapore and the US held their first joint naval exercise called CARAT in 1995, to strengthen cooperation between the two navies.

This year has seen the US take part in war games with six countries in Southeast Asia, including Brunei,  Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. Cambodia and Bangladesh were new participants./.
