The National University of Singapore (NUS) was named Asia’s top university and ranked 26 th globally in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2015-2016.

It is the only Asian university to enter the world’s top 30 based on the THE World University Rankings, which draw on data from 1,100 institutions, 11 million academic papers and more than 11,000 academic surveys to develop a list of top 800 universities from 70 countries and territories.

The rankings employ 13 separate performance indicators to reflect a university’s strengths in five pillars, each of which represents a key area of higher education excellence: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

NUS President Tan Chorh Chuan said that the university’s achievements are the result of strong support from the government, as well as a commitment to excellence by its faculty, staff and students.

The THE World University Rankings, founded in 2004, provide a definitive list of the world's best universities, evaluated across teaching, research, international outlook, reputation and more. THE's data is trusted by governments and universities and is a vital resource for students in helping them chose where to study.

Other Asian universities with high positions in the world rankings include China’s Beijing University (42 nd ), Japan’s Tokyo University (43 rd ), Hong Kong University (44 th ) and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU).-VNA
