The earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, shook the northern island of Hokkaido in the Pacific and districts in Aomori and Iwate prefectures at 6:09 pm (local time), according to Japan ’s Meteorological Agency.
It was followed by a 20 centimetre tsunami which prompted local authorities to issue an evacuation warning to coastal residents. The agency then lifted all tsunami warnings 90 minutes later.
Within almost three hours, a 6.1 magnitude quake threatened buildings in the capital. Its epicentre was located just off coast of Chiba , east of Tokyo only 10 kilometres beneath sealevel.-VNA
