Snowfalls have covered a number of roads in the tourist town of Sa Pa in Lao Cai province as an intense cold spell hit the northwestern provinces in the evening of January 9, pushing the temperature here down to zero degree Celsius.

According to local residents, areas with an altitude of 1,900 metres upwards have been covered with a layer up to 10 centimetres while lower areas have suffered from thick ice.

Earlier, the National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Centre said that Lao Cai would experience a cold on early January 10 with the lowest temperatures of 1-2 degrees appearing at a height of 2,000 metres above the sea level.

According to the provincial Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Centre, rain and biting cold weather will continue hitting the locality in the next few days.

Therefore, the Lao Cai People’s Committee has asked relevant agencies to take measures to ensure the health of local residents, especially old people and children, as well as protect plants and livestock.-VNA
