The Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang has promptly rolled out measures to contain the spread of avian influenza, after six cases of the infection were detected in the districts of Cu Lao Dung and Nga Nam.
According to Quach Van Tay, head of the provincial Department of Animal Health, local authorities are actively publicising effective ways to prevent the disease and destroy dead poultry to local farmers.
Although nearby My Xuyen district has not recorded any bird flu-infected poultry yet, it is facing a high risk of an outbreak as numerous scavenging ducks that may carry the virus often travel around rice fields in surrounding provinces.
In preventing the spread of bird flu, the animal health branch of My Xuyen’s Dai Tam commune has tightened control over migrating ducks and enhanced poultry vaccinations. The commune now houses more than 60,000 ducks, including scavenging ones.
Soc Trang now has over 5 million poultry. Its steering committee for animal epidemic prevention and control has implemented urgent measures to minimise the spread of bird flu.-VNA
