A workshop to discuss building the capacity of social work has attracted both domestic and foreign universities and institutes.

During the two-day conference in Hanoi starting from January 18, participants admitted that despite being a new-born sector, social work has developed remarkably in Vietnam.

Over the last ten years, over 2,500 students have graduated in the field from over 40 universities and colleges nationwide.

They, however, have raised the need for an improved curriculum on social work and higher-quality lectures.

They added that activities to draw the participation of individuals and organisations at home and abroad in social work services are also required.

A master plan approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in 2010 officially recognised social work as a profession. The plan has marked a milestone in the sector’s development and created space for social work to thrive at all levels, contributing to building a strong social welfare system.

Under the plan until 2020, as many as 65,000 social workers will be trained to meet the requirement of the work.-VNA
