A soldier has been dismissed from military service in the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) province of Gia Lai while two other soldiers are given a warning following public anger over photos posted on Facebook showing the soldiers torturing two monkeys.
Nguyen Van Quang, 20, from central Quang Nam province , was identified among others in 12 photos of two endangered gray shanked douc langurs being tortured and dismembered on his Facebook page.
A local, Ha Van Tu, 37, was also arrested for being involved in the case. Tu said he and two other people captured the two langurs in the forest and sold them to the two soldiers at the price of 1.2 millin VND (57 USD) investigators are looking for the other two culprits.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defence asked Quang’s army unit to report on any cases of the capture, torture and killing of endangered monkeys.-VNA
