The first 400MW turbine of the Son La Hydropower Plant officially generated electricity to the national grid on December 17, two years ahead of schedule, according to Electricity of Vietnam (EVN).

The operation of the first turbine is expected to ease the country’s power shortages and pave the way for the completion of the remaining turbines in late 2012.

The Son La Hydropower Plant is designed to have a total capacity of 2,400 MW with six turbines, each of 400 MW.

When construction finishes, the plant will provide over 10.2 billion kWh of electricity for the national power grid each year, contributing to the socio-economic development of the whole country and the northwestern region in particular./.
