“Song of Earth” symphony has premier performance in Vietnam

“The Song of the Earth,” a large-scale work for two vocal soloists and orchestra by the Austrian composer Gustave Mahler will be on stage at the Hanoi Opera House on July 12-13.

The Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra announced on July 6 that Swedish alto Anna Einarsson and Vietnamese tenor Trinh Thanh Binh will also perform at the event.

The work, composed in the years 1908-1909, includes six separate movements, each of them an independent song.

“The Song of the Earth” is an integration of song cycles and symphony and a combination of Western and Eastern culture.

The work was first performed publicly in Munich , Germany in 1911.

Anna Einarsson was born in 1978, in Uppsala , a university-city north of Stockholm , Sweden . She began composing her own songs and performing them to audiences at the age of 13. She has joined several performances of Mahler’s work hosted by the VNSO.

Trinh Thanh Binh, born in 1979, is now working at the VNSO. He has recently played Don Jose in the critically acclaimed “Carmen.”-VNA
