Thua Thien– Hue (VNA) – Leaders of more than 30 cities in ASEAN countriesgathered at a conference in Hue city, the central province of Thua Thien-Hue onDecember 14-15 to discuss sponsoring and implementing sustainable developmentprojects for cities in the Southeast Asian region.
Theconference was jointly organised by the International Association ofFrench-speaking Mayors (AIMF), the European Union and Hue city.
Addressingthe event, Chairman of Hue city People’s Committee Nguyen Van Thanh said that theconference aims to share experience in mobilizing financial resources forsustainable urban development projects.
He alsohighlighted Hue’s efforts to contribute to AIMF activities and the city’sdetermination to deeply integrate into the French-speaking community as well asto protect and develop heritage values.
Three thematicseminars were held within the framework of the conference, dealing with advantagesin calling for investment, experience in responding to climate change in theregion, the role of cities in strengthening regional integration, cooperationamong cities in Southeast Asia, ASEAN and the engagement of cities insustainable development.
AIMF PermanentSecretary Pierre Baillet said that ASEAN is strongly integrating into the worldeconomy and facing many challenges in education, rising population and climatechange. This requires French- speaking mayors to seek new governance methods,including financial policies.
Participantsat the event also shared experience in defining the role played by cities incalling for investment to sustainable urban development and climate changeresponse.
Deputy ForeignMinister Le Hoai Trung lauded activities of AIMF in sustainable urbandevelopment, noting that the association has created strong connectivity amongmember cities and Francophone organisations in the region and the world.
He alsoexpressed hope that the association will play a bigger role in step up regionaland inter-regional cooperation for the sustainable growth of cities inSoutheast Asia.-VNA
