In 2014, the provinces are planned to cultivate rice in an area of over 4.7 million ha, producing over 27 million tonnes of rice, up almost 59,000 tonnes over 2013. In the 2013-2014 winter-spring crop, the total rice cultivation area is 1.7 million ha with average productivity of over 6.74 tonnes per hectare.

To meet the target, the localities need to develop the large-scale rice field model and apply advanced technology in the farming process, said a meeting to review the 2013 rice production in the southern region, which was held by in Tra Vinh province on September 23 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

According to the MARD’s Cultivation Department, the region saw a stable growth in rice production in 2013 although facing difficulties in rice production and consumption. The total rice cultivation area was over 4.7 million ha with average productivity of 5.72 tonnes per hectare.

Noticeably, there were 76,000 hectares in the region applied the large-scale rice field model in the winter-spring crop and almost 54,000 ha in the summer-autumn crop, contributing to increasing the productivity and improving the quality of rice in the region.-VNA
