The Hon Me Wildlife Rescue Centre in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has received six Tibetan bears from its counterparts in Cat Tien National Park.

The bears, which weigh between 87-120kg, are the first wild animals the Hon Me rescue centre has taken in since it was established.

All the bears are now healthy and in a stable condition and are fitted with electronic chips for monitoring purposes, said the provincial Union of Friendship Organisations.

The centre is planning to receive four more bears for breeding from the Ho Chi Minh City-based Wildlife Rescue Centre in the next few days and another 20 from other centres by the end of the year.

The first phase of the 5ha centre is now under construction at a total cost of 500,000 USD funded by the Australian non-profit organisation Wildlife At Risk (WAR)./.
