Can Tho (VNA) - The Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment held a ceremony on March 5 in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho to put an environmental monitoring station in the southwest region into operation.

Covering 2,000 sq.m in Phong Dien district of Can Tho city, the five-storey building includes a complex of offices and labs with modern equipment for environmental monitoring.

According to vice director of the VEA Hoang Van Thuc, construction of the station began in October 2016.

Laboratory systems and technical equipment have been installed, while staff and engineers have been trained to operate the station.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Tuan Nhan said pollution is affecting the lives, production activities and health of citizens and the country's development achievements.

To address this problem, the Government approved a national environmental resource monitoring network plan for 2016-2025, which aims to build a synchronous and modern national natural resources and environmental monitoring system to provide basic information for State management on natural resources and environment; serve forecasts and warnings; and prevent environmental pollution.
