Vietnam wishes to strengthen friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Finland and is willing to welcome Finnish investors to do business in the country, said State President Nguyen Minh Triet.
President Triet made the statement at a Jan. 11 reception given to Speaker of the Finnish Parliament Sauli Niinisto, who is on a four-day official visit to Vietnam beginning Jan. 10 at the invitation of NA Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong.
He applauded Finland ’s receiving of Vietnamese guest workers and thanked the nation for taking a stance against the European Commission (EC)’s decision to extend anti-dumping duties on Vietnamese leather-capped shoes.
President Triet also thanked the Finnish government and people for valuable support and assistance they have extended to Vietnam, stressing that despite the global economic-financial crisis, Finland pledged to increase its official development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam.
Speaker Niinisto said cooperation between the two legislatures is one of the most important factors that foster the Finland-Vietnam relationship. In this spirit, the Finnish Parliament promised to make positive contributions to beefing up friendly ties between the two nations, he said.
The Speaker noted with pleasure favourable conditions for Finland and Vietnam to expand cooperation, especially in the field of economy.
He stressed that the Finnish President and people are looking forwards to President Triet’s state-level visit to Finland this year, in a move to elevate the bilateral friendship and cooperation to a new height.
The same day, Speaker Niinisto was received by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, who said the Vietnamese government is willing to join hands with Finland to step up cooperation in education, training and culture.
The government of Vietnam would work with its Finnish counterpart to realise already signed agreements, thus developing bilateral relations in all fields, he said.
The PM said the Finnish ODA-funded projects have been carried out effectively, contributing positively to Vietnam ’s recent socio-economic achievements.
He took this occasion to thank the Finnish government for its support for overseas Vietnamese who are working and studying in the European country.
For his part, Niinisto affirmed that Finland is ready to assist Vietnam in any areas in which Vietnam needs.
The Speaker highlighted the fruitful cooperation in the provision of ODA and labour, adding that Finland and Vietnam hold potentials for further labour cooperation.
Niinisto said that he and his Vietnamese counterpart, Nguyen Phu Trong, earlier discussed and put forth specific measures to ratchet up legislative relations in the years to come./.
