The Veterans’ Association of Vietnam (VAVN) convened the fifth patriotic emulation congress in Hanoi on December 2, seeing the attendance of State President Truong Tan Sang.

The congress was timed to coincide with the association’s 25th founding anniversary.

The President, in his speech, said VAVN has grown into a strong socio-political organisation that represents the strong will and aspirations of war veterans across the country.

He asked VAVN to work closely with the Vietnam Fatherland Front and units concerned to put the regulations on democracy at grass-roots level in place while giving feedback on social activities and Party build-up.

Lieut. Gen. Phung Khac Dang, Vice President of the VAVN Central Committee, said the campaign “Exemplary war veterans” has spread far and wide over the past five years.

VANV has so far grouped 16,000 chapters with 2.8 million members who have lent a hand with clearing up 77,900 rundown houses and reducing the rate of poor households to 4.22 percent, he added.-VNA
